Now my problem is how to aesthetically light a large open area. Simply dropping a torch every five blocks or something would begin to look silly, especially in the day. I’ve tried replacing blocks of dirt with Netherack and lighting it so it looks like a campfire or something, but when you get too many it begins to look like an accidental fire.
You also, with WorldEdit, have the possibility of marking up and area and using //setlight (0-15) This command allows you to light up that specific area, the only bad thing about it, is that you can’t really make it look natrual.
umm for the inside itself, try using a kitchen, dining room, with redstone lamps under pistons for a table with a lightsource, try and leave an open feel so make your walls inside out of say sugercane, or bushes, glass planes, to keep the house with an airy feel, You could also put glowstone under chests and beds, and nifty little way to light stuff up. Maybe if you have a big …
Get a light source block (sea lantern, glowstone block, beacon, etc) and place a carpet or transparent block on top. In the ceiling, make a hole 2 blocks up in it, place some sort of light source block in the upper hole, and then cover it with white stained glass. put a light source block behind a painting
Torches are 14 light at the source, so place one every six blocks on the floor and you’ll be fine. Monsters can also only spawn on floor tiles, so you don’t need to light your walls/ceiling….
You can press F3 to bring up the debug information, there is information regarding the light level of the block your head is in. So you need to keep it above 8 (so the floor is above 7). The number you need to pay attention to is rl (real light) as long as this is high enough mobs cannot spawn. Share Improve this answer
using worldedit i did this: //replace air 10%torch,90%air //replace air glass //replace glass air It will replace air with a 10 percent chance to a torch, and the other two commands are just to update the blocks, or in other words, get rid of flying torches to make it look real.
Well, if you don’t have any wooden structures, dig a 1×1 (2 block deep) hole every few squares and put some lava or fire there. Or, you could dig out a larger area for maximized potential. (protip…
Glowstone provides a luminescence of 15, whereas torches only provide 14. However, placing the glowstone block in the ground reduces the area that it lights up to that of a torch, whereas placing a torch on the ground lets it provide maximum light while still remaining flat to walk on, just not to look at. It all comes down to choice really.

How do I hide the light source in the ground?
I’ve found that sinking the light source in the ground (lantern/glowstone) and covering it with carpet is a lot less ugly if you sprinkle some bonemeal around it and mask it with tall grass and flowers. Another trick that works well is to cover it with carpet and then build a “bush” around it with leaf blocks.
